Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Hon. Evans Kapkea, while representing Governor H.E Dr. Jonathan Bii, on Saturday led residents and county officials during the Mater Heart Run event held at Moi Girls High School, Eldoret, reaffirming the county’s commitment to supporting children living with heart conditions through improved access to quality healthcare.
The event brought together senior county leaders, healthcare professionals, students, and members of the public in a show of solidarity aimed at raising awareness and mobilizing support for children in need of cardiac treatment.
Speaking during the event, the Deputy Governor lauded the impact of the Mater Heart Run initiative in transforming lives and offering hope to families affected by heart disease.

In support of the initiative, Deputy Governor Kapkea, together with County Executive Committee Member for Health Services Janet Kurgat, presented a dummy cheque worth KSh 200,000 towards the Mater Heart Run programme.
The contribution underscores the County Government’s commitment to supporting life-saving medical interventions for vulnerable children.
One of the most emotional moments of the ceremony was the testimony of Irene, mother to young Nehemiah Kibet, who was born with a hole in the heart. Through support from the Mater Heart Run programme, Nehemiah successfully underwent treatment and is now recovering well, bringing renewed hope and joy to his family.
“I am grateful because my child has been given a second chance at life,” Irene said as she shared her moving testimony.
Kapkea further called on individuals, organizations, and development partners to support the initiative, noting that collective efforts can help save more lives and ease the burden on affected families.
The Mater Heart Run continues to play a critical role in funding heart surgeries and treatment for children across Kenya, with leaders urging more stakeholders and well-wishers to join the noble cause and help give children with heart conditions a chance at a healthier future.

The Deputy Governor was accompanied by County Executive Committee Members Janet Kurgat (Health Services), Robert Kemei (Youth and Sports), and Philip Chebunet (Trade and Industrialization). Also present were Chief Officers Dr. Billy Lubanga (Promotive and Preventive Health) and Ambrose Tarus (Clinical Services), alongside section heads and other county officials.
