UPLIFTING AGRICULTURAL PROSPERITY: UASIN GISHU COUNTY CALLS FOR FARMER COLLABORATION AND UNVEILS DEVELOPMENT PLANS

Farmers have been urged to make use of mobile maize driers and aggregate their produce as they await better prices.

Speaking in a speech read on his behalf by Deputy Governor Eng John Barorot, Governor Jonathan Bii said the driers are an advantage to farmers as the machines reduce post harvest losses.

The DG was delivering the Governor’s speech during Tuesday’s Jamhuri day celebrations held at Chepkigen Primary school grounds, Soy Sub-county, Uasin Gishu County.

In the speech, the Governor underscored that the county projects 6.6 million bags of maize due to a successful bumper harvest, while aurging farmers not to hurriedly sell their produce to middlemen.

“We hereby urge our farmers not only to dry maize for sale but also for personal consumption to counter aflatoxin and to aggregate produce to avoid selling to middlemen at lower prices,” he added.

The county administration, dedicated to food sustainability outlined in the Nguzo Kumi blueprint, has transformed agriculture significantly, embracing structured mechanization and climate-smart practices for increased yields.

Regarding the dairy sector, he emphasized that farmers in cooperatives are set to receive 25 milk coolers as a boost to the growing demand.

“Mapping processes across the wards have commenced and will be a determinant of the milk capacity before Governor Bii’s administration avails the coolers,” he added.

Concerning the planned construction of the Export Processing Zone, Iconic market, and County Aggregation and Industrial Park, Governor Bii noted that plans are on course and will offer job opportunities for the youth with more focus on exports.

The event was also attended by the County Commissioner, Dr Eddyson Nyale who assured of a boost in security during the festive season.

Also present were Area Member of Parliament, David Kiplagat, Members of the County Assembly, County Executive Committee Members, County Secretary, Chief Officers, and other county officials.
