UASIN GISHU POISED TO BECOME REGIONAL TOURISM HUB THROUGH SUSTAINABLE INITIATIVES

The County Government of Uasin Gishu is actively collaborating with neighbouring counties, the private sector, and local communities to develop sustainable tourism products aimed at positioning the county as a premier tourism destination in the region.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ engagement on the proposed National Tourism Policy and Tourism Bill 2024 on Monday, County Executive Committee Member for Trade, Cooperatives, and Tourism Martha Cheruto emphasized the county’s commitment to harnessing its unique strengths in sports, agriculture, culture, and industrialization to drive sustainable tourism growth.

“With dedication and collaboration, counties within the North Rift Economic Bloc (NOREB) can transform the region into a thriving tourism destination, creating economic opportunities while preserving our rich cultural heritage,” said Cheruto.

She highlighted the County Government’s investments in world-class facilities, support for local athletes, and hosting of international sporting events as key steps toward solidifying its status as a premier sports tourism destination.

David Kinyangi, Director of Tourism representing the Principal Secretary of the State Department for Tourism, highlighted the significance of the proposed policy and bill in addressing emerging trends, promoting sustainable tourism, and enhancing governance structures. He noted that the legislation aims to; Promote eco-tourism and cultural heritage preservation, strengthen institutional oversight and governance, integrate technology to streamline tourism operations and foster strong partnerships between the national and county governments, private sector, and local communities

The engagement, organized by the State Department for Tourism, is part of a nationwide consultation effort across nine regions to gather stakeholder input and ensure the effective implementation of tourism policies.

Present at the event were County Director of Tourism Margaret Aiyabei and other tourism officers.
