The County Government of Uasin Gishu, Department of Agriculture and Agribusiness on Thursday launched a Pyrethrum Multiplication Demonstration Plot at Chagaiya Dispensary to improve farmers’ access to quality planting materials, thereby creating opportunities for farmers to embrace pyrethrum farming.
While representing His Excellency Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii, the County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Mr. Edward Sawe, encouraged the residents to reintroduce pyrethrum farming citing the area’s conducive climate for such cultivation.
Sawe, noted that pyrethrum is well-regarded for its environmentally friendly insecticidal properties, making it a sought-after commodity in both local and global markets.
CECM Sawe, highlighted the relevance of the pyrethrum multiplication plots, mentioning that the initiative will facilitate the growth of 5,000 pyrethrum splits.
According to Sawe, the distribution plan includes 3,000 splits for Chagaiya, 500 each for Chirchir and Chereber, and 1,000 splits for Cheboror and Baregeiywo.
“The launch of this pyrethrum multiplication demonstration plot is a proof to our dedication to enhancing agricultural productivity and supporting our farmers in Uasin Gishu County. By supplying high-quality planting materials, we are equipping farmers to boost their crop yields and improve their livelihoods,” said Mr. Sawe during his speech.
Area Member of County Assembly Hon. Thomas Yego who was also present promised to continue boosting pyrethrum production in his ward.
Agriculture Chief Officer Mr. Elphas Kesio highlighted the transformative potential of pyrethrum cultivation in the region’s agricultural landscape.
“With effective management and support, pyrethrum can emerge as a crucial income source for our farmers. It’s about more than just planting; it’s about fostering a sustainable agricultural ecosystem that benefits all participants,” he remarked.
Kesio stated that the achievement of this initiative is linked to Governor Bii’s broader agricultural development plan, which seeks to enhance the financial situation of locals by promoting sustainable farming methods.
Directors Joel Ruto (Agribusiness) and Jacob Arusei (Chebororwa ATC) Kesses Sub-County Agricultural Officers were in attendance at the launch event.
