UASIN GISHU COUNTY PARTNERS WITH KENYA SEED TO ADDRESS MAIZE SEED SHORTAGE

The County Government of Uasin Gishu in partnership with the Kenya Seed Company has taken the initiative to tackle the scarcity of maize seeds within the region.

The strategic partnership aims to cultivate 400 acres of maize in Chebororwa ATC to increase maize production to meet the growing demand in the country.

During an inspection exercise of the seed production project, County Executive for Agriculture Mr. Edward Sawe expressed his satisfaction with the progress noting the need to enhance the seed population and the commitment to expand the seed production in the county.

The CECM who also visited Chebororwa ATC Coffee Nursery announced the availability of subsidized coffee seedlings at a cost of Ksh. 30 each.

“Currently there are 40,000 Batian variety seedlings ready for distribution with an additional 150,000 seedlings expected to be ready for distribution in the next two weeks on a first-come, first-served basis,” said Sawe.

Agriculture Chief Officer Mr. Elphas Kesio in a sentiment echoed by Karuna/ Meibeki ward MCA Hon. James Serem emphasized the importance of the seed production project in addressing seedling shortages and providing a revenue-generating opportunity for the county.

Mr Kesio reiterated Governor Jonathan Bii’s commitment to promoting innovation, sustainable farming practices, and addressing challenges faced by farmers in accessing quality seedlings.

Director of Chebororwa ATC Mr. Jacob Arusei expressed optimism about the initiative’s potential to meet local seed demands and position Uasin Gishu as a centre for seed production and agricultural excellence.

Governor Jonathan Bii’s county government is committed to realising the positive outcomes in terms of increased seed availability, crop diversity and enhanced agricultural resilience in the county.

Principal of Chebororwa ATC Mr. Eric Boinet was also present during the inspection.
