UASIN GISHU COUNTY CRACKS DOWN ON LIQUOR OUTLETS IN MAJOR INSPECTION DRIVE

Uasin Gishu County is gearing up for a countywide crackdown on unregulated liquor businesses as the Department of Health Services, through the Alcoholic Drinks Control Board, is set to launch a comprehensive inspection of all liquor outlets starting on 15TH October 2025.

Speaking during a multisectoral preparatory meeting, the Director of the Alcoholic Drinks Control Board, Mr. Koiya Arap Maiyo, announced that the County is ready to commence inspections and licensing approvals following a surge in applications 1,012 in total with Turbo Sub-County leading the pack, closely followed by Moiben.

Maiyo emphasized the need for a coordinated, multi-agency approach, calling on stakeholders to uphold teamwork and strictly adhere to the inspection checklist developed for each liquor premise.

“This process is not just about issuing licenses—it’s about protecting our communities, ensuring accountability, and promoting responsible alcohol consumption,” said Maiyo.

Director of Promotive and Preventive Services, Mr. Laban Kiprop, underscored the importance of complementing the enforcement exercise with youth mentorship and public health education. He urged that mentorship sessions be held to educate young people on the dangers of alcohol abuse and called for fairness and professionalism during surveillance and inspection operations.

“All premises must be properly licensed, and inspections must be conducted transparently at the relevant sites,” Kiprop stated, adding that surveyors will play a crucial role in verifying the suitability of premises.

The multisectoral team further announced that godown inspections will be intensified to verify serial numbers on alcoholic products for traceability in the event of harm or contamination. Special attention will also be given to bars operating near learning institutions as part of efforts to shield students from exposure to alcohol.

The County Government of Uasin Gishu reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that public health, safety, and legal compliance remain top priorities in the alcohol sector.

As the inspection drive rolls out, liquor outlet owners are urged to prepare for rigorous checks, while the public is encouraged to support the initiative for a safer and healthier Uasin Gishu County.
