UASIN GISHU COUNTY COLLABORATES WITH ULTRAVETIS AFRICA LIMITED TO TRAIN EXTENSION OFFICERS ON CLIMATE-SMART PASTURE

In an effort to promote sustainable agricultural practices, The County Government of Uasin Gishu through the Department of Agriculture Agribusiness Livestock and Fisheries, in collaboration with Ultravetis Africa Limited on Thursday held a training session for the extension officers.

The workshop focused on introducing the extension officers to an innovative climate-smart pasture at the Teachers Advisory Centre (TAC).

The training graced by Mr. Nixon Cheplong (Chief Officer for Livestock Mr. Abraham Kiptanui (Director of Livestock) and County Commissioner Eddyson Nyale demonstrates the significance placed on empowering agricultural extension officers with knowledge and skills related to climate-smart farming techniques.

During the training session, participants were trained on the newly innovated climate-smart pasture, which offers a sustainable approach to livestock farming in the face of changing climatic conditions therefore equipping extension officers with the necessary expertise to educate local farmers on the benefits and implementation of climate-smart practices.

“By introducing extension officers to innovative farming methods, the training sought to enhance resilience in livestock production, mitigate climate change impacts, and improve overall agricultural productivity,” said Cheplong.

The Chief Officer emphasized the importance of equipping extension officers with up-to-date knowledge and progressive techniques, recognizing the role these officers play in disseminating information and providing guidance to farmers.

“By embracing climate-smart practices, farmers can adapt to environmental challenges while ensuring the long-term viability of their agricultural operations,” added Cheplong.

Mr. Kiptanui, the Director of Livestock, highlighted the potential benefits of implementing climate-smart pastures, including increased animal productivity, improved soil health, and enhanced water retention capabilities.

He highlighted that adopting these practices can enhance Uasin Gishu’s agricultural sector’s ability to withstand the impacts of a changing climate.

The training session is a significant step towards establishing a sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural system in Uasin Gishu County. With extension officers now equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills, they are poised to play a crucial role in spreading information, implementing climate-smart initiatives, and assisting local farmers in embracing sustainable farming methods.
