In a spirited push to scale up fish farming in the region, the County Assembly Committee for Livestock and Fisheries conducted an extensive field visit to assess the state of aquaculture in Uasin Gishu County.
Led by Committee Chair Nicholas Bittok and Livestock Development and Fisheries Chief Officer Nixon Cheplong, the delegation toured several fish farms to gain firsthand insights into the sector’s progress and challenges.
“We wanted to see for ourselves how fish farming is being practised across the county and what support our farmers need to thrive,” said Bittok.

Among the standout visits was a stop at Imani Farms in Kapsoya, owned by Dr. Nyalevof, where raised fish ponds exemplified cutting-edge, sustainable aquaculture techniques. The team also visited farmer Peter Kattam, who operates four earthen ponds and has successfully integrated fish farming into his hospitality business, selling fresh fish at his hotel.
Livestock Development and Fisheries Chief Officer Nixon Cheplong noted that the engagement is just the beginning and is committed to working hand-in-hand with farmers and the County Assembly to transform aquaculture into a major economic driver in Uasin Gishu.
Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii nguzo Kumi’s blueprint has placed Agriculture, Agribusiness, Livestock Development and Fisheries at the heart of the country’s economic development and aquaculture, being a crucial component, will no longer remain a niche but a key contributor to the region’s economic transformation.
