COOPERATIVE SOCIETIES: A PILLAR OF ECONOMIC STABILITY – CECM CHERUTO

CECM for Trade and Cooperatives Martha Cheruto has underlined the vital role of cooperative societies in enhancing economic stability and promoting sustainable practices across societies.

Speaking on Tuesday during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) for Tuiyo Farmers Cooperative Society in Kapseret Sub County, Cheruto praised the society for its impressive achievements over the past four years, emphasizing the positive impact it has had on local farmers and the economy.

“The progress made by Tuiyo FCS is commendable, and we are excited about the future,” Cheruto stated.

She expressed confidence that the ongoing collaboration between the County Government and the cooperatives will enable it to reach its full potential.

“Tuiyo Farmers Cooperative Society is a shining example of what can be achieved when farmers come together. We are proud to support their efforts and we will continue to ensure they have the resources they need to flourish,” she added.

Chief Officer for Cooperatives, Ruth Samoei, who also participated in the AGM, stressed the importance of membership in cooperatives.

“In cooperatives, numbers matter. It is essential for farmers to buy shares to fully benefit from what the cooperative has to offer,” said Samoei.

She highlighted that good governance is crucial for the future of cooperatives in the county adding that “the tyranny of numbers” demonstrates the power inherent in collective action, particularly through value addition and capacity-building initiatives.

As Tuiyo Farmers Cooperative Society celebrates its fourth anniversary, it reflects on a journey that began on September 15, 2020. The cooperative currently processes an impressive over 3400 litres of milk daily, significantly contributing to the livelihoods of its members and bolstering the agricultural economy of the region.

According to Tuiyo FCS Chair Paul Siret, the cooperative is committed to solidifying its impact on the local dairy industry while continuously improving the livelihoods of its members.

“With the support of the county and various partners, the cooperative is well-positioned to expand its operations and achieve greater success in the coming years,” Siret stated.

Directors Roselyne Rae (Cooperatives), Samuel Wambugu (Co-op Audit), and Kipleting Mengich (Enterprise) were among present.
