CALL FOR ENHANCED POLICIES FOR CLIMATE SMART AGRICULTURE AND CLIMATE ACTION

The County Government of Uasin Gishu is pushing for better policies to help in efforts of climate change mitigation as well as the realisation of climate-smart agriculture.

While addressing stakeholders during the National Agriculture Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP) County Environmental Committee Induction Meeting at ATC Chebororwa, County Executive Committee Member for Water and Environment Dr. Sam Kotut emphasised the importance of laying a strong foundation for the commercialisation of agricultural and increasing agricultural productivity and profitability of rural communities to help improve climate resilience and enhance value chain development.

“As a county, we are keen on revitalising and transforming the agriculture sector from subsistence to commercial oriented sector through a clear initiative of increasing market participation and value addition for all farmers.”

“Our Governor is championing such initiatives through the distribution of high-value crops such as coffee, and avocado,” he said.

Additionally, the County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture Mr. Edward Sawe reiterated the importance of intensifying infrastructure investments into select value chains and supporting farmer-led irrigation development at all levels to enhance access to credit and supporting them to participate in climate action initiatives to safeguard the environment.

“I am happy we are making good progress in the establishment of a policy that is non-discriminative and which will ensure all stakeholders meet certain regulations that safeguard the environment and the society,” said CECM Sawe.

The two County Executives also urged stakeholders in the agriculture and environment sectors to remain proactive in the ongoing transformations for the county to succeed in safeguarding the environment and promoting smart agriculture for a better society.

Chief Officers Elijah Koech (Water) Mary Kerich(Environment)Elphas Kesio(Agriculture)and Eunice Suter(Gender and Social Protection) were also present.
