The County Government of Uasin Gishu on Sunday hosted Dog Expo in Eldoret, attracting dog fans, trainers, breeders, and pet lovers from across the country in an event that was held to promote responsible pet ownership and foster a stronger culture of animal welfare.
Chief Officer for Livestock, Mr. Nixon Cheplong, together with his counterpart for Preventive and Promotive Health Dr. Paul Wangwe, were among the top county officials who graced the event.
“As we see more residents embracing pet ownership, it’s vital to provide them with the right knowledge and tools. Dogs are not just pets, but they are family, and how we treat them reflects the values of our community.” Cheplong stated.

Dr. Wangwe echoed these sentiments, adding that animal health is closely linked to public health.
“Proper pet care reduces the risk of zoonotic diseases and contributes to a cleaner, safer environment for everyone,” he said.
The expo featured a wide variety of dog breeds showcased in agility displays, obedience trials, and fun competitions. However, the heart of the event lay in its comprehensive sensitization campaign, which addressed key issues around dog ownership and public health.
Attendees were taken through several sessions covering Responsible Pet Ownership Experts, emphasizing the importance of regular vet visits, proper nutrition, and mental stimulation for dogs, Animal Welfare, humane treatment of animals, discouraging neglect, abandonment, and cruelty.
Veterinarians provided tips on preventive care, including vaccinations, parasite control, and dental hygiene, while grooming experts showcased techniques and the importance of regular grooming for a dog’s well-being.

The event provided a platform for local rescue groups, veterinary clinics, and pet product vendors to interact with the public, where partnerships and volunteerism within animal welfare circles was encouraged.
The Eldoret Dog Expo marks a major step forward in promoting a responsible, compassionate, and informed pet culture in Uasin Gishu and beyond.
