CRACKDOWN ON ILLICIT BREWS AND REHABILITATION OF DRUG ADDICTS CONTINUES TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS UNDER THE COUNTY’S ADCB MANDATE

The County Government of Uasin Gishu, through the Alcoholic Drinks Control Board (ADCB), has made significant progress in addressing alcohol and drug addiction.

Since the establishment of the Moiben Rehabilitation Centre, over 32 individuals have been treated and rehabilitated, marking a major milestone in the county’s fight against illicit brews and substance abuse.

The rehabilitation efforts have catered to men, women, and youth, offering them a second chance at life through comprehensive care at the county’s rehabilitation center.

Upon arrival, clients undergo a thorough assessment process, which includes detoxification, physical recovery, health examinations, nutritional guidance, spiritual counselling, and education on the effects of drug and alcohol abuse. These steps form the foundation of the 90-day rehabilitation program.

On Thursday, during the third graduation ceremony for 11 rehabilitated individuals, ADCB Director Koiya Arap Maiyo reaffirmed Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii’s commitment to creating a sober and productive county.

“Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii has emphasized the importance of utilizing allocated funds effectively to ensure the success of rehabilitation programs. His vision is for a county where all residents, particularly the youth, can engage in meaningful economic activities rather than succumbing to the perils of drug and alcohol abuse,” said Koiya.

The funds allocated to rehabilitation have also supported reformed brewers, especially women, by enabling them to form groups and start small businesses. These initiatives provide sustainable alternatives and empower individuals to contribute positively to their communities.

Koiya also announced plans to establish a model rehabilitation center with separate wings for men and women. This expansion aims to accommodate more individuals and enhance the quality of care provided. Additionally, new admissions are scheduled for early 2025 to rescue and rehabilitate those adversely affected by substance abuse.

Moiben Sub-County Administrator Moses Kangogo encouraged the graduates to view their rehabilitation as a turning point. He urged parents and communities to support the graduates as they reintegrate into society and lead fulfilling lives.

Heartfelt testimonials from graduates, including Prison Warden Dickson Kibosia and high school teacher Nelson Too, moved the audience. Too shared his journey of overcoming addiction, which had prolonged his university studies by eight years. He expressed gratitude for the transformative impact of the rehabilitation program.

The ceremony marked the rehabilitation of over 700 individuals in Uasin Gishu across various rehabilitation facilities, underscoring the county’s dedication to creating a sober and productive society.
