COUNTY ENCOURAGING FARMERS TO TAKE GOOD CARE OF HIGH-VALUE CROPS

To enhance the prosperity of farmers and strengthen the agricultural sector, the County Government of Uasin Gishu is advocating for a 100 per cent survival rate of high-value crops distributed to farmers.

During the distribution of more than 10,000 coffee seedlings and 800 avocado seedlings to farmers in Tulwet/Chuiyat and Segero/Barsombe wards at the Eldoret ASK Show, Agriculture Chief Officer, Mr. Elphas Kesio, reiterated the department’s dedication to improving the economic impact of farmers through the successful cultivation of these crops.

“High-value crops such as coffee and avocado play a crucial role in enhancing the economic well-being of farmers, as they offer lucrative market opportunities and have the potential to significantly uplift their livelihoods,” stated Kesio.

He emphasized the importance of achieving a 100% survival rate for these crops, highlighting the necessity for farmers to receive adequate support, guidance, and resources from the county government to overcome challenges such as pests, diseases, and adverse weather conditions that could hinder the growth and productivity of the crops.

Farmers in Tulwet/Chuiyat and Segero/Barsombe wards expressed appreciation for the county government’s support and pledged their commitment to nurturing the crops diligently to ensure a successful harvest. They acknowledged the significance of high-value crops in improving their livelihoods and expressed optimism about the positive impact this initiative will have on their farming activities.

Director Agribusiness Joel Rutto, Coffee Officer Nicholas Maritim and showground Manager Mr. Dancan Kimeli were present during the exercise.
