COUNTY CONDUCTS ASSESSMENT FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Hundreds of children with special needs in Uasin Gishu County on Thursday turned up for an assessment exercise at the ACK North Rift Rehabilitation centre.

The exercise is being conducted by the County Government of Uasin Gishu Department of Social Protection in collaboration with Kijabe Mission Hospital, the National Government and ACK Church.

Speaking during the exercise, Chief Officer for Social Protection and Gender, Marion Birgen, said the exercise is part of the county’s efforts to support persons with special needs.

“An elaborate assessment has been conducted, and we are encouraged by the high turnout of children with special needs,” said Birgen.

Once the assessment is completed, the county government and other supporting partners will provide guidance on the most appropriate interventions, including providing them with assistive devices.

The Chief Officer further noted that the county has intensified awareness campaigns targeting persons with special needs, describing the initiative as key to effectively addressing their challenges.

She also urged parents and guardians not to hide children living with special needs.

“No one with special needs should be hidden. Everyone should come out, register, get assessed and access government support,” she said.
