The County Government of Uasin Gishu on Monday joined regional leaders and stakeholders in the official launch of the Cherang’any Conservation Run, set to take place on May 21, 2026, at Kabiego Comprehensive School.
The race will serve as a precursor to the unveiling of the CHERISH Programme, scheduled for May 22, 2026.
The CHERISH Programme (Cherangany Hills Ecosystem Restoration for Livelihood Improvement, Sustainability and Harmony) is a 10-year initiative targeting environmental conservation and community development across Elgeyo Marakwet, Uasin Gishu, West Pokot, and Trans Nzoia counties.
The programme is spearheaded by Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Onesmus Kipchumba Murkomen.

Representing CS Murkomen, who is also the programme’s patron, Mrs. Murkomen highlighted the initiative’s key pillars. These include ecosystem restoration and climate resilience, community empowerment, education and knowledge management, promotion of sports and culture, and resource mobilisation and institutional coordination.
Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wesley Rotich, who attended the event, reaffirmed his county’s commitment to the initiative. He emphasized the importance of sustained conservation efforts, noting that consistency and increased stakeholder involvement will be crucial to the programme’s success.
Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii was represented by the County Executive Committee Member for Water and Environment Mr. Anthony Sitienei, who delivered a goodwill message underscoring the county’s dedication to the initiative and its goals.
Organizers have called on athletes and members of the public to register and participate in the conservation run, describing it as a historic opportunity to unite communities in the effort to protect and restore the Cherang’any Hills ecosystem for future generations.
