WORLD WETLANDS DAY 2026 COMMEMORATED IN KAPSERET SUB-COUNTY

World Wetlands Day 2026 was commemorated on 2nd February, as part of a global initiative to raise awareness about the critical role wetlands play for both people and the planet.

The celebrations were held at Lemook Primary School in Kapseret Sub-County and were graced by the Governor of Uasin Gishu County, Dr. Jonathan Bii.

The event brought together various institutions operating within Uasin Gishu County, alongside residents from across Kapseret Sub-County.

This year’s theme, “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage,” underscored the enduring importance of traditional knowledge in sustaining wetland ecosystems while preserving cultural identity.

Speaking during the event, Governor Bii urged residents to protect wetlands, emphasizing the county’s commitment to promoting sustainable practices.

“We are taking action to promote smart farming and other practices that protect and sustain our wetlands. Let us honor the wisdom of our ancestors and safeguard our ecosystems for future generations,” he said.

The Department of Water, Environment, Natural Resources and Energy, led by CECM Mr. Anthony Sitienei, played a key role during the celebrations. He was joined by Chief Officers Mr. Mark Some and Mr. Elijah Koech, as well as directors and staff from the department, in marking World Wetlands Day 2026. Also present was the Chief Officer for Finance, Mr. Eliud Chemaget.

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), which played a crucial role in organizing the event, was represented by Director Mr. Solomon Kihiu.

He encouraged residents and communities to embrace environmental conservation through tree planting and active participation in environmental protection initiatives.

The event reinforced Nguzo Number 7 – Service Delivery, which focuses on improving the living standards of Uasin Gishu County residents through affordable water and sanitation services, a clean, safe, and healthy environment, and the sustainable management and conservation of natural resources.
