In preparation for World No Tobacco Day (WNTD), the County Government of Uasin Gishu, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health’s Division of Drugs and Substance Abuse, hosted a comprehensive training workshop on Monday aimed at strengthening tobacco control efforts.
The pre-WNTD training brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including county enforcement officers, public health officials, city inspectorate personnel, magistrates, prosecutors, Eldoret Airport enforcement officers, officers from the National Police Service, national government enforcement teams, and sub-county administrators.

The session offered a deep dive into the realities, dangers, and evolving nature of tobacco and nicotine use in Kenya.
The workshop led by Dr. Toro Andrew guided participants through the prevalence of tobacco and nicotine products, their severe health implications, and their socio-economic and environmental impacts.

Attendees also reviewed the wide array of tobacco products currently in circulation and gained an in-depth understanding of Kenya’s legislative and regulatory framework for tobacco control.
Deputy Director of Public Health Laban Kiprop, alongside Principal Programs Officer Johannes Mosbei, emphasized the importance of the training in enhancing the ability of local authorities to enforce tobacco-related laws and raise public awareness.
“By equipping key stakeholders with the right knowledge and tools, Uasin Gishu is taking bold and proactive steps toward a healthier, tobacco-free future,” said Kiprop and Mosbei.
