UASIN GISHU PARTNERS WITH SNV TO PROMOTE CLEAN ENERGY IN FARMING

The County Government of Uasin Gishu on Tuesday hosted the SNV Power for Food Partnership Forum, an initiative aimed at promoting the use of clean energy in agriculture to strengthen food production and build a more resilient farming sector.

Speaking during the event, CECM for Agriculture and Livestock, Dr. Sam Kotut, said the partnership will transform agriculture through technology, value addition, and climate-smart practices.

“We are proud to be part of this movement helping farmers transition from manual, rain-fed farming to modern, clean energy solutions that make agriculture more reliable and profitable through three key interventions—Learn, Link, and Leverage,” said Dr. Kotut.

The forum, led by SNV Programme Manager Judith Libaisi, brought together County Directors of Agriculture from Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Kericho, Nakuru, Nandi, and Uasin Gishu, who shared insights on the Power for Food Partnership as key stakeholders driving agricultural transformation at the county level.

According to Libaisi, the Power for Food Partnership, which is implemented by SNV in collaboration with national and county governments, the program promotes the use of solar energy in irrigation, food processing, and storage.

The goal is to help farmers overcome challenges such as climate change, high energy costs, and post-harvest losses. Participants discussed innovations such as solar-powered irrigation systems, cold storage facilities, and renewable-powered processing units, which can help farmers increase yields, reduce food waste, and boost their incomes.

The County Government reaffirmed its commitment to continue working with SNV and other partners to empower farmers with sustainable technologies that improve livelihoods while protecting the environment.

“Under the leadership of Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii, we are building a modern, resilient agricultural economy powered by innovation and renewable energy,” the statement added.

The SNV Power for Food Partnership is part of a global effort to promote sustainable and climate-smart agriculture, ensuring that farmers have access to affordable energy solutions and reliable food systems for the future.
