UASIN GISHU MARKS WORLD WETLANDS DAY WITH CALL FOR CONSERVATION

Uasin Gishu County has joined the global community in marking World Wetlands Day at Sosiani, emphasizing the urgent need for wetland protection and sustainable environmental management.

Themed “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future,” the event highlighted the critical role of wetlands in supporting biodiversity, regulating climate, and sustaining local livelihoods.

The occasion was graced by Rael Lelei, Commissioner at Nairobi Rivers, alongside senior county officials and environmental stakeholders.

Chief Officer for Environment, Natural Resources, and Climate Change, Mark Some, lauded the local community for its commitment to conservation and announced plans to invest in Sosiani Dam to maximize its benefits for residents.

He further pledged stricter environmental enforcement in collaboration with NEMA, ensuring wetlands remain protected.

The County Executive Committee Member for the Environment, representing H.E. Governor Jonathan Chelilim Bii, emphasized the importance of community-driven conservation efforts, noting that fencing wetlands is a crucial step in preventing encroachment.

The initiative aligns with Governor Bii’s Nguzo Kumi development agenda, prioritising clean water, sanitation, and sustainable environmental management. County leaders reaffirmed their commitment to restoring and preserving critical ecosystems, ensuring wetlands continue to serve future generations.
