The County Government of Uasin Gishu on Thursday marked Day Two of the International Deaf Awareness Week 2026 with a deaf awareness and sensitisation session at St. John’s Sigowet Primary School in Kiplombe Ward, Turbo Sub-County.

The team visited the school to create awareness and educate learners on deafness, the rights of deaf people, inclusion and the importance of embracing persons with disabilities.

The engagement brought together the Uasin Gishu Deaf Community, led by Chairlady Rosemary Saina, staff from the County Government’s Department of Gender and Social Protection, and partner Edmund Rice.

Caustencia Tanui, representing the Chief Officer for Gender and Social Protection, Marion Birgen, led the county team. The programme was facilitated by George Lubuga, a County Government Sign Language Interpreter.

The team was welcomed by Headteacher Peris Kamau, who appreciated the initiative aimed at promoting greater understanding and inclusion among learners.

The celebrations are being undertaken under the leadership of Dr. Jonathan Bii Chelilim, Governor of Uasin Gishu County, and will culminate tomorrow, 25th September, with the Grand Celebration, including a procession from Town Hall to Home Craft.
