UASIN GISHU, A SURPRISE FOOTBALL FRONTIER

Uasin Gishu is among counties that have shrugged off the general lacklustre to produce surprise performances at the Talanta Hela Football Tournament.

Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Ababu Namwamba acknowledged Uasin Gishu County as among counties that have produced surprises at the tourney.

Uasin Gishu County’s boys and girls football teams have qualified to play at next month’s finals in Nairobi, after quality plays at the tournament’s qualifiers in Nyeri.

For a county well known for athletics, the general belief is that Uasin Gishu is an underdog in football. Not much was expected in terms of football.

However, as Namwamba said, Uasin Gishu and Mandera are among counties that have proved that there is immense talents at the grassroots and just need platforms.

The CS said he had been following the Nyeri competition and that the ultimate winner of the tourney could come from the teams that played at the Nyeri playoffs.

The boy’s teams came unbeaten in five matches, while the girls lost two in in six matches played. The CS spoke at the end of Nyeri tourney plaoffs. County Chief Officer for Youth and Sports, Nahum Jelagat, attended the event at Nyeri Primary.
