REVITALIZING LIVESTOCK HEALTH: NEW CATTLE DIPS UNDERWAY IN UASIN GISHU

In a concerted effort to revive, restock, and establish new cattle dips to enhance livestock health and productivity, Acting Chief Officer for Livestock, Mr. Elphas Kesio, officially handed over the site for the construction of the Kapsang Cattle Dip in Soy Sub-County on Friday.

This initiative is part of Governor Jonathan Bii’s broader strategy to rehabilitate and construct cattle dips across the county, aimed at combating livestock diseases and improving cattle health.

The project entails rehabilitating 102 existing cattle dips and constructing seven new ones, with an allocated budget of Ksh. 28.95 million.

This investment is expected to play a crucial role in safeguarding the livestock sector, which serves as a primary source of livelihood for many farmers in the region.

During the handover, Mr. Kesio emphasized the critical role of cattle dips in controlling livestock diseases, particularly tick-borne infections, which pose a significant threat to cattle populations.

“The establishment of these cattle dips is not just about infrastructure; it is about ensuring the health and productivity of our livestock, which is a key pillar of our agricultural economy,” he stated.

He further noted that all 109 cattle dips are expected to be handed over to contractors within the next two weeks, ensuring that construction begins promptly—a testament to the administration’s commitment to livestock health and farmer support.

Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Philip Biama, reiterated the importance of proper cattle dip management for effective disease control.

“These dips will provide a vital service to our farmers, significantly reducing livestock diseases and enhancing cattle quality,” Dr. Biama remarked.
