The distribution of high-value crops officially kicked off today in Tulwet/Chuiyat Ward, Kesses Sub-County, marking a major milestone in Uasin Gishu’s climate action and economic empowerment strategy.
A total of 185 farmers received 90,000 coffee seedlings and 1,700 avocado seedlings as part of a climate change mitigation initiative spearheaded by FLLoCA (Financing Locally-Led Climate Action)
This groundbreaking initiative aligns with climate-smart agricultural practices, promoting sustainability through shade-grown coffee cultivation—a method known to improve soil health, enhance biodiversity, and sequester carbon. In addition to environmental benefits, the initiative is expected to uplift local livelihoods by introducing high-value crops to the region.
The ceremonial distribution was led by H.E. Hon. Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim, who was accompanied by Deputy Governor Hon. Kapkea, former Deputy Governor Hon. Chepno, Area MCA Julius Songok, CECM for Water, Environment, and Natural Resources Mr. Anthony Sitienei, Chief Officer for Environment, Energy and Natural Resources Mr. Mark Some, Chief Officer for Administration and Devolution Mr. Ambrose Tarus, Environment Director Kipchumba Barno, FLLoCA Director Abigael Kibet, and Ward Administrator Susan Kisorio.

Governor Chelilim urged residents to embrace the agrarian transformation underway:
“Let us embrace coffee growing as a high-value crop to improve our living standards. This marks the latest agrarian revolution in Uasin Gishu that will define the legacy of devolution. Let’s start small and be patient—we are on the path to greatness through coffee.”
Among the jubilant beneficiaries was Mama Salina, who received over 1,000 coffee seedlings. She shared her excitement:
“I’ll drive a Prado very soon because I’ve started planting coffee. I urge all of us to embrace diversification to transform our lives.”
Senior county officials echoed the Governor’s sentiments, applauding FLLoCA for its climate-oriented and community-empowering initiatives.
The County Climate Unit (CCU), led by Ann, facilitated the distribution and guided farmers on best practices for successful cultivation.
The FLLoCA continues to transform lives in Uasin Gishu through its wide range of projects aimed at addressing climate change and improving living standards. Residents are increasingly optimistic about the future as they witness real change in their communities.
