Uasin Gishu County Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii Chelilim has called for increased investment in climate-smart agriculture and farmer-centred agribusiness as farmers continue to experience the effects of changing weather patterns.

In a speech delivered by CECM for Agriculture during the Agribusiness Trade Fair 2026 held at the University of Eldoret, Dr Bii noted that the challenges experienced by farmers in 2026, including unpredictable and inadequate rainfall, have demonstrated the need for agricultural systems that can withstand the effects of climate change.

Governor Bii said climate-smart innovations, modern technologies and diversified agricultural enterprises are important in helping farmers adapt to changing climatic conditions while improving productivity and household incomes.

He highlighted the County’s efforts to strengthen the coffee value chain, including the ongoing expansion of coffee production and farmer support initiatives. More than 5,000 farmers have been reached through the coffee planting exercise, as the County works to increase coffee production, promote climate-resilient farming and create greater opportunities for farmers across the value chain.

The Governor said the Agribusiness Trade Fair provides an important platform for farmers, researchers, students, entrepreneurs, investors and other stakeholders to interact, showcase innovations and explore opportunities in modern agriculture.

University of Eldoret Vice-Chancellor Prof. Thomas Kimeli Cheruiyot said the Agribusiness Trade Fair 2026 provides an important platform for bringing together farmers, researchers, students, entrepreneurs, investors and other stakeholders to showcase innovations, exchange knowledge and build partnerships.

He encouraged participants to explore the technologies and opportunities presented at the exhibition, noting that stronger collaboration between academia, government, farmers and the private sector is essential in building a resilient, productive and inclusive agricultural sector.

The three-day event, running from 24th to 26th September 2026 at the University of Eldoret Main Campus, is being held under the theme:

“Promoting Innovative Climate-Smart, Farmer-Centred Agribusiness for Sustainable, Inclusive Development.”

The Governor encouraged farmers and other participants to take advantage of the exhibition to learn about climate-smart technologies, modern farming solutions, agribusiness opportunities and innovations that can help build more resilient and sustainable agricultural livelihoods.
