FIRST LADY SALINA BII LEADS UASIN GISHU IN POWERFUL CALL FOR EARLY CANCER DETECTION ON WORLD CANCER DAY

The County Government of Uasin Gishu joined the rest of the world on Wednesday in marking World Cancer Day 2026, with First Lady H.E. Salina Bii calling for early detection, stigma-free care, and collective action against cancer.

The event, held under this year’s theme “Unified by Unique,” was attended by Turkana County First Lady H.E. Lilian Ekamais and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital’s Senior Director of Clinical Services, Dr. Andrew Wandera, highlighting the importance of inter-county collaboration and specialized care.

Speaking during the commemorations, H.E. Salina Bii described cancer as a deeply human experience affecting families and communities, urging residents to embrace early screening.

“Cancer is not a death sentence when detected early,” she said, while paying tribute to survivors and honouring those lost to the disease.

She emphasized the prevention and early treatment of breast and cervical cancers, urging women to utilize free and subsidized screening services, while encouraging men to also seek screening, particularly for prostate cancer.

The First Lady called for an end to stigma and myths surrounding cancer, noting that timely care and accurate information save lives. She also praised healthcare workers, partners, and community volunteers for their dedication to awareness, screening, and patient support.

H.E. Lilian Ekamais lauded Uasin Gishu’s initiative, noting that cancer knows no borders and requires united action, while Dr. Wandera underscored the role of referral hospitals in improving outcomes through timely diagnosis and comprehensive care.

Leaders urged residents to take personal responsibility in the fight against cancer, reiterating that every action and every life matters.

The event was also attended by Chief Officers Dr Paul Wangwe (Promotive and Preventive Health) and Ambrose Tarus (Clinical Services).
