Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea has said the County Government is bolstering efforts to expand green spaces as part of a broader push to link sports with environmental sustainability.
DG Kapkea spoke on Tuesday while presiding over a symbolic tree-planting exercise organised ahead of the Eldoret City Marathon, scheduled for April 26 in Eldoret.
The event was held at Hill School, Eldoret.
He emphasised that sports and climate action are closely intertwined, noting that a well-conserved environment promotes a healthy lifestyle.
According to the Deputy Governor, increased tree cover contributes to cleaner air, supports healthy lungs and creates a conducive environment for sporting activities.

The DG described the initiative as an effort to plant “hope, health and a greener future,” drawing parallels between the endurance required in marathon running and the long-term growth of trees.
He reiterated the county’s commitment to scaling up greening initiatives.
County Assembly Speaker Philip Muigei, alongside Members of the County Assembly, including Gilbert Lagat and Amos Kiptanui, pledged support for programmes aimed at strengthening sports development.

Moses Tanui who is the race Director and the first human to run half marathon in under 60 minutes, appreciated the County Government for supporting the marathon over the years.
Also present were the County Executive Committee Member for Youth and Sports, Robert Kemei and Chief Officer for Sports, CPA Victorine Kapkiai.
The ceremony highlighted the marathon’s dual objective of promoting sporting excellence while leaving a lasting environmental legacy in Uasin Gishu County.
