DEPUTY PRESIDENT OFFICIALLY CLOSES THE 2023 DEVOLUTION CONFERENCE

Deputy President H.E. Rigathi Gachagua, on Friday, closed the 2023 devolution conference at the Eldoret Sports Club, celebrating the successful complementary system of governance during the event.

The Deputy President highlighted the positive transformation of investment resources at the grassroots level and emphasized the Kenya Kwanza belief in fostering a strong grassroots economy.

“The conference showcased good practices and lessons for the future of devolution, focusing on driving economic development from the local level, with county governments playing a central role, ” He said.

H.E Ann Waiguru, Chair Council of Governors, reflected on the progress made over the past ten years, acknowledging the significant changes brought about by devolution.

The face of Kenya has positively transformed due to devolution, allowing citizens to access public services more conveniently. The sectors of health, agriculture, transport, infrastructure, housing, urban development, industry, investment, youth and early childhood development showed notable improvement, “said Waiguru.

However, the reflections also highlighted the challenges that devolution has faced since its inception. Recommendations were made to address the challenges and pave the way for a new decade under devolution.

“The President expressed support for devolution, committing to transferring functions and resources to counties within 60 days, the government also pledged to disburse county resources by the end of the 2023 financial year, reaffirming its commitment to the devolution process”, She added.

Governor Jonathan Bii on his part called on his commitment to tackling challenges, recognizing opportunities, and crafting solutions to advance the progress of the devolved units.

The triumph of the conference serves as a testament to his dedication, turning it into a noteworthy milestone.
