COUNTY INTENSIFIES PUBLIC AWARENESS ON URWASCO MANAGEMENT OF RURAL WATER PROJECTS

The County Department of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, in collaboration with the Uasin Gishu County Rural Water and Sanitation Company (URWASCO), has intensified public sensitization on the registration of consumers in rural water projects across the county.

The initiative is aimed at ensuring that all completed rural water projects have registered consumers, a move expected to strengthen the management, maintenance and sustainability of the projects while guaranteeing residents long-term access to safe, clean and reliable water.

On Friday, the sensitization team visited the Chepterit Water Project in Segero/Barsombe Ward, Soy Sub-County, which has been completed and is awaiting commissioning. Residents were taken through the role and mandate of URWASCO, as well as the importance of registering as water users.

The team of county engineers and URWASCO operators urged residents to cooperate fully with the registration exercise to facilitate a smooth transition and effective management of the water project.

Engineers in charge of the project, Eng. Francis Ndasaba, Eng. Chris Mbevi and Eng. Celestine Kigen, encouraged residents to participate actively in the exercise, noting that proper registration and management would help ensure the project is maintained to the required standards.

They assured the community that placing the projects under professional management would enhance their sustainability and enable residents to continue benefiting from reliable water services for years to come.

The sensitization team was led by Assistant Director of Water Development, Eng. Metto.

The ongoing public awareness campaign is also intended to help residents understand the role of URWASCO and their responsibilities as consumers. The county says registration of all consumers will provide a strong foundation for proper management and maintenance of the rural water infrastructure.

The initiative is part of the county government’s efforts under Nguzo Number 7, which seeks to ensure that residents of Uasin Gishu have access to safe, clean and reliable water supply.

The sensitization exercise is expected to continue across the county, with all completed rural water projects set to gradually come under the management of URWASCO.

The County Government says the transition will help safeguard investments in rural water infrastructure, improve service delivery and ensure that the projects deliver sustainable, long-term benefits to communities.
