COUNTY, HAND IN HAND TO COLLABORATE, PROVIDE MARKET ACCESS FOR POULTRY, VEGETABLES

The County Government of Uasin Gishu is set to agree with Hand in Hand East Africa in a pact that will provide market access for county traders through creation of aggregation centres for vegetables and the training of entrepreneurs to expand trade.

While playing host to Hand in Hand delegation on Friday, Chief Officer for Trade CPA Victorine Kapkiai said they are looking forward to the partnership to leverage the expertise and resources of the organization in implementing sustainable initiatives that will benefit the local community and contribute to the economic growth of traders across the agricultural value chain.

Hand In Hand areas of concern are on two value chains, poultry farming and Indigenous vegetables/African leafy vegetables.

CO Kapkiai further said access to the market by traders is a huge bottleneck that traders have been battling over time, noting that the agreement will be of great help.

“Our farmers have the capacity of producing the required amount and to further encourage them to do so is to capacity build and support them financially,” said Kapkiai

Already, the County through the Department collaborated with the organization to install a cold room(vegetables specific) at the Bahati wholesale market to enable vegetable producers to store and preserve their produce for sale.

Governor Jonathan Bii is currently building the County Aggregation and Industrial Park (CAIP) in Moiben, intending to benefit traders by promoting sustainable economic development, enhancing agricultural practices, and creating market opportunities for local traders and farmers.

According to Hand In Hand CEO Albert Wambugu, they have been working closely with trade officers by reaching out to fresh produce farmers across the value chains adding that partnership will further see the export of the county vegetables globally.

Trade officers Wycliffe Wasonga and Geoffrey Kiprotich were present.
