HEALTH, AGRICULTURE AND INFRASTRUCTURE TAKE LION SHARES AS COUNTY MINISTER TABLES UASIN GISHU BUDGET

Health has emerged as the biggest winner in the proposed KSh 12.99 billion Uasin Gishu County Government budget for the 2026/2027 Financial Year, with the sector receiving KSh 3.37 billion to strengthen healthcare services, complete key infrastructure projects, and enhance access to affordable and quality medical care.

County Executive for Finance and Economic Planning, Micah Rogony, on Wednesday presented the budget estimates before the County Assembly, outlining a development-focused fiscal plan anchored on economic growth, wealth creation, improved service delivery, and prudent management of public resources.

The budget will be financed through KSh 9.26 billion from the equitable share of nationally raised revenue, KSh 1.4 billion from Own Source Revenue (OSR), KSh 530.65 million in conditional grants, and KSh 708.7 million from Appropriation-in-Aid (AIA). In a move aimed at cushioning residents from additional financial pressure, the county government will not introduce new charges, levies, or fees despite the targeted amendments proposed under the Finance Bill, 2026.

Agriculture and agribusiness remain a strategic pillar of the county’s economic transformation agenda, with KSh 729 million allocated to support agro-processing, value addition, irrigation development, promotion of high-value crops, farmer capacity building, strengthened market linkages, and the revitalization of Agricultural Mechanization Services (AMS) to increase productivity and enhance food security.

In the health sector, the county will prioritize the completion and equipping of the Uasin Gishu County Hospital Diagnostic Centre, upgrading of health facilities across wards, completion of ongoing projects at Moiben, Turbo, and Ziwa hospitals, acquisition of additional ambulances, strengthening of emergency and referral systems, recruitment and training of health personnel, digitization of health services, and uninterrupted supply of essential medicines.

Trade, Industrialization and Cooperative Development will receive renewed focus through the expansion of the Fanikisha Hustle and Enterprise Fund to increase access to affordable credit for MSMEs, farmers, women, youth, and entrepreneurs. The county will also prioritize completion and operationalization of the 64 Champions Market and the County Aggregation and Industrial Park (CAIPs) to enhance value addition, processing, storage, and market access.

Infrastructure remains a key driver of economic development, with KSh 1.2 billion earmarked for roads and related projects. The county plans to operationalize its asphalt plant to accelerate road upgrades to bitumen standards, improve rural access roads, and enhance connectivity to markets, schools, health facilities, and other essential services. Investments in water distribution networks, storage facilities, irrigation, and climate-resilient infrastructure will also be prioritized through strategic partnerships.

Education, skills development, innovation, and youth empowerment will continue to shape the county’s long-term development agenda. The county will modernize Vocational Training Centres into centres of excellence, fast-track the completion of the Modern Library, Youth Empowerment and Innovation Centre, strengthen ECDE infrastructure, support school feeding programmes, provide learning materials, and recruit instructors to improve the quality of training.

The 2026/2027 budget is expected to unlock Uasin Gishu County’s productive potential by linking infrastructure, agriculture, manufacturing, and investment to value addition and expanded market access. Through strategic investments in facilities such as the County Aggregation and Industrial Parks (CAIPs), the Export Processing Zone (EPZ), potato processing plant, and high-value agricultural value chains including coffee and avocado, the county aims to transition from primary production to processing, branding, marketing, and sustainable wealth creation.
