COUNTY NUTRITIONISTS APPRAISED ON DIABETES MANAGEMENT AND SKILLS FOR BOOSTING INFANT NUTRITION IN CONTEXT OF HIV

The County Department of Health Services conducted a technical update session for nutrition professionals, focusing on Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) in the context of HIV, as well as updates on the management of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM & T2DM).

The session brought together Sub-County Nutritionists and nutritionists from health facilities across the county to strengthen their knowledge, review updated national guidelines, and enhance service delivery to communities.

Speaking during the session, Director of Preventive and Promotive Services Mr. Laban Kiprop expressed concern over the rising number of diabetes cases in the county and called for increased public sensitisation in schools, churches, and community forums to promote healthy eating habits and prevent chronic diseases.

He noted that diabetes prevalence in Kenya stands at 4.2 per cent (about 1.6 million people), with studies showing higher rates in urban areas compared to rural communities.

Assistant Director Nutrition and Dietetics, Susan Bett, emphasized the importance of continuous professional development among health workers, noting that proper infant and young child feeding practices are key in preventing malnutrition and promoting healthy child growth, for a healthier community.

Inspired by Governor Dr Jonathan Bii’s pillar of strengthening health for a productive people, the County Government is committed to reinforcing healthcare delivery through continuous capacity building and integrated nutrition and disease management programs.
