WORLD BANK, AFD, AND NATIONAL TEAM APPLAUD GOVERNOR BII FOR GREAT KISIP PROGRESS IN UASIN GISHU

Uasin Gishu County Governor H.E. Dr. Jonathan Bii Chelilim has received widespread commendations from the World Bank, the French Development Agency (AFD), and the Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Programme (KISIP) National Team for the impressive strides made in improving infrastructure in Eldoret’s informal settlements through the KISIP programme.

The accolades were delivered this morning as the delegates visited Uasin Gishu County to assess the progress of ongoing projects aimed at transforming the region’s informal settlements. During the visit, Mr. George Arwa, the National Coordinator for KISIP, highlighted that Uasin Gishu is one of the highest-funded counties in the country under the programme. The county has been allocated top funding, and its impressive 65% project completion rate is a clear indication of effective implementation and progress.

Governor Bii expressed his gratitude, acknowledging the trust and confidence placed in the county’s capacity to manage such a significant project. “We have a strong team under the County Project Implementation Team led by the County Executive Committee Member for Lands, Mr. Edward Sawe. This team has been instrumental in ensuring that all grievances related to environmental and social safeguards are addressed swiftly, ensuring minimal disruptions to the project’s progress,” said Governor Bii.

The Governor also noted the early challenges posed by heavy rainfall during the project’s start but assured that the county has been able to maintain a steady pace, with plans to complete the works by the end of June.

World Bank team leader Mr. Raymond Kirwa lauded the exceptional progress, attributing much of it to the contractor’s efficiency and adherence to timelines. “The success of this project is a testament to the hard work and commitment of all involved,” said Mr. Kirwa.

Mr. Ganties Singh Kohler from AFD assured that funding for the projects would be enhanced to ensure that such developments reach more people, as the impacts are great.

Deputy Governor H.E. Evans Kapkea welcomed the national team and expressed his appreciation for the profound impact KISIP has had on the lives of residents in Eldoret’s informal settlements “The changes brought about by KISIP are evident in the improved quality of life for the residents. These projects are not just about infrastructure; they are about lifting communities and creating opportunities,” said Deputy Governor Kapkea.

The delegation later visited the project’s key beneficiaries, including Segero, KK, Kasarani, Shauri, Kipkaren, and Mwanzo, all of which have experienced significant improvements. These upgrades include the ongoing construction of tarmacked roads, installation of high-mast lights, building of ablution blocks, development of drainage systems, and creation of walkways. These interventions are transforming the settlements and providing a better environment for residents to live, work, and thrive.

As Uasin Gishu continues its journey toward development, the KISIP project remains a key catalyst in improving infrastructure and the standard of living for thousands of residents in the county.

Hon. Francis Muya, the MCA Langas ward, noted that the collaboration between executive leadership, county assembly, and international partners showcases the power of teamwork in achieving sustainable development goals.

Also present in the discussions were Chief Officer Housing and Urban Development Mr Julius Koech, Zenah Kirui- NPCT, Veronica Koech- Pamoja Trust, Directors Nelly Jerotich and Beatrice Menjo, among other senior government officials.
