The transformation of the iconic Kipchoge Keino Stadium is gathering pace, with the National Government intensifying construction works to ensure the facility is ready for this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations while laying the foundation for Kenya’s hosting of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Leading an inspection of the ongoing works, Principal Secretary for Defence Dr. Patrick Mariru said the government remains fully committed to delivering the project on schedule, emphasizing that the stadium will serve generations of Kenyans long after the national celebrations.

Principal Secretary for Sports Elijah Mwangi noted that the upgraded facility will elevate Kenya’s sporting standards while positioning Uasin Gishu as a leading hub for sports, tourism and investment.

Speaking on behalf of the County Government, CECM for Lands, Housing and Urban Development Edward Sawe reaffirmed the county’s commitment to working closely with the National Government to ensure the project’s successful completion.

He observed that the investment will stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities and leave a lasting impact on the lives of residents.

The joint inspection highlighted the strong collaboration between the two levels of government in delivering a landmark project expected to transform the region’s sporting landscape and drive socio-economic development.

Among those present were Director General of Sports Kenya Timothy Kilimo, County Attorney Sylvester Metto, Chief Officer for Sports Victorine Kapkiai, Eldoret City Manager Elzeba Busienei, Colonel Kibuchi of the Defence Headquarters Special Projects team, officers from the Ministry of Defence, and officials from both the National Government and the County Government of Uasin Gishu.
