COUNTY ACCELERATES TOURISM DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS WITH NEW MAPPING INITIATIVE

The County Department of Tourism on Wednesday convened a stakeholder meeting that brought together consultants, representatives from Timeline Solutions, and officers from the Ministry of Tourism to discuss the identification and mapping of tourism products across Uasin Gishu County.

The exercise will cover a wide array of tourism assets, including natural attractions, cultural heritage sites, agritourism activities, sports facilities, historical landmarks, community-based experiences, and hospitality establishments.

While Uasin Gishu is globally celebrated for its athletics legacy, officials noted that many other attractions remain underutilized due to limited documentation. This has highlighted the need for a comprehensive Tourism Mapping Programme, which will involve field assessments, data collection, GPS mapping, photography, and the development of detailed profiles for each tourism product.

County Executive Committee Member for Trade, Tourism, and Industrialization, Martha Cheruto, emphasized the county’s commitment to unlocking its full tourism potential:

“This mapping programme is a crucial step toward understanding and showcasing what Uasin Gishu truly has to offer. By documenting our attractions in a structured and professional manner, we are laying the foundation for strategic investment, enhanced marketing, and stronger community participation. Our goal is to ensure that every unique tourism product in this county is recognized, supported, and promoted.”

Director of Tourism, Margaret Aiyabei added that the initiative is expected to broaden the county’s tourism appeal. She noted that the programme will position Uasin Gishu as a diverse tourism destination beyond its renowned sports reputation, highlighting rich opportunities in culture, nature, agribusiness, events, and leisure.

Consultants from Timeline Solutions presented the methodology, timelines, and anticipated outcomes, noting that the final mapping report will serve as a guide for future tourism development, marketing strategies, and investment planning.
