The County Government of Uasin Gishu in conjunction with the Kenya Climate Innovation Centre (KCIC) on Wednesday commenced a two-day workshop focusing on waste management in Eldoret ahead of the city status coronation.
This initiative is part of a concerted efforts of addressing critical issues surrounding waste disposal and sustainability within the region.
The County Executive Committee for Water, Dr. Sam Kottut said that the workshop aims at establishing a solid foundation for the development of a comprehensive policy and legal framework for waste management across the County.
‘”As a county, we are committed to aligning its efforts with the National Sustainable Waste Management Policy and the Sustainable Waste Management Act of 2022, signaling a driven approach to environmental conservation and sustainable development” Said Dr Kottut.
The CECM emphasized the county’s dedication to promoting sustainable development and addressing environmental challenges through collaborative and innovative approaches, recognizing the pressing need to address environmental pollutants and safeguard ecological health for current and future generations.
Chief Officer for Water Elijah Koech reiterated the county government’s commitment to fostering effective waste management practices and ensuring environmental sustainability noting that the partnership with the Kenya Climate Innovation Centre is a strategic alliance aimed at leveraging innovative solutions and best practices to tackle waste management challenges in the region.
Exploring practical strategies, technologies, and policies to enhance waste reduction, recycling, and proper disposal mechanisms in the County also formed part of the workshops’ deliberations.
Director Silah Letting said that the opportunity is a significant steps towards establishing a robust waste management framework.
