Moiben MP Phyllis Bartoo, the chief guest, joined officials in highlighting the need to end child marriage and other harmful practices that continue to undermine the rights, safety and future of girls.

Speaking during the event, Chief Officer for Gender and Social Protection Marion Birgen, who represented Governor Jonathan Bii, reaffirmed the county government’s commitment to protecting children from abuse, exploitation, violence and neglect. She said the county would continue working with stakeholders to strengthen child protection systems and ensure that girls have access to education, healthcare and opportunities to participate fully in society.

The event was also attended by Director of Social Protection Emily Biwott, Member of County Assembly representing Persons with Disabilities Regina Chumba, Assistant County Commissioner for Kapseret Clare Naliaka, and Victorine Kapkiai, Chief Officer for Youth Affairs, Sports, ICT and Innovation, alongside representatives from various partner organisations.

Participants noted that child marriage often cuts short girls’ education, exposes them to health risks and limits their economic prospects. They urged parents, schools, communities and authorities to report cases of abuse and take decisive action against individuals who facilitate or promote child marriages.

The event also provided an opportunity for students and young people to share their experiences and call for greater support in pursuing their education and personal ambitions. Speakers encouraged girls to speak out against discrimination and harmful practices while urging communities to create safe environments where they can learn, grow and thrive.

The event was convened by the Hope for Kenya Slum Adolescent Initiative (HKSA), Edmund Rice and the County Government of Uasin Gishu, with support from various partners. Stakeholders called for continued collaboration, stronger enforcement of laws and sustained investment in programmes that protect girls’ rights and prepare them for a brighter future.
