GISHU COUNTY REVIEWS KISIP II CONCERNS AS PROJECT ENTERS RETENTION PERIOD"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The County Government of Uasin Gishu continues to incorporate public input arising from different levels of the implementation of the Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Project Phase II (KISIP II).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This follows a high-level review meeting held at the Ardhi House Board Room, convened by the Department of Lands, Physical Planning, Housing and Urban Development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting brought together officials from the County government, the National Project Coordination Team (NPCT) led by Zenah Kurui, the County Project Coordination Team (CPCT), the KISIP implementation team and community grievance structures from informal settlements in Eldoret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chief Officer Housing &amp; Urban Development Mary Kerich and County Director for Housing Beatrice Menjo chaired the forum, which was attended by NPCT heads and officers, safeguards officers, and community representatives, including the Grievance Redress Committee (GRC) Chair and leaders of the Settlement Executive Committees (SECs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deliberations were anchored on the latest monthly grievance report, which shows that civil works under KISIP II have been substantially completed and the project is now under the retention period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the report, while some complaints were addressed promptly during construction, several cases remain unresolved, prompting concerns from affected residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The outstanding grievances include cracking of houses and perimeter walls linked to vibrations from heavy machinery, partial damage to gates, demolition of semi-permanent houses, food kiosks and toilets during road construction, and environmental concerns over waste and spoil left on class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addressing the meeting, Chief Officer Mary Kerich called on the SECs to intensify community sensitization and urged them to sensitize the community to own the project, protect and make good use of it to benefit them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms. Kerich also said the sustainability of the new roads and drainage will depend on community ownership, noting that vandalism and dumping of waste into drains undermines the gains made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the meeting, participants resolved that the contractor must be formally instructed to immediately resolve all pending grievances, close all accident and incident cases, and complete the outstanding community sensitization and training as required under the project safeguards, with clearance of all cases being a prerequisite before final release of retention money and closure of the World Bank-supported project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also present were SECs leadership from the seven KISIP II beneficiary settlements, namely Segero, KK, Kipkaren, Mwanzo,
