The County Government of Uasin Gishu is intensifying efforts to improve solid waste management amid rapid urban growth, with county leaders and environmental stakeholders having met to deliberate on strengthening sustainable practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The engagement, organized by the Department of Environment, brought together county environment directors, city officials, and senior officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The session was chaired by County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Roads and Public Works, Abraham Serem, who represented the CECM for Water and Environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The forum featured a delegation from the Kenya Extended Producer Responsibility Organisation (KEPRO), led by Isaiah Mumo, who introduced Phase 2 of the Consumer-Led Transformation (CLT) initiative, a flagship five-year program launched in 2024 to promote responsible waste management practices among households.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenya continues to face mounting pressure on its waste management systems, owing to growing populations and urbanization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although public awareness of proper waste disposal is continually raised, the practice of separating waste at the source remains a challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CLT initiative seeks to address this gap by encouraging households to segregate organic and recyclable waste at the point of generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phase 1 of the program, implemented in 2024, focused on awareness creation across seven regions, reaching over 1,000 participants through public sensitization campaigns and stakeholder engagement. In 2025, the program expanded to eight counties, engaging more than 700 participants and laying the groundwork for community-level involvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phase 2 will now shift focus to practical implementation, including piloting waste segregation at source in select counties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uasin Gishu County, where Eldoret City is located, is among the five major urban areas selected for the rollout, following similar efforts in Kisumu and Nakuru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The upcoming county drive, scheduled to take place at Boma Inn Hotel in Eldoret, aims to engage approximately 1,000 households, particularly in low- and middle-income areas. Participants will include county officials, representatives from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), private service providers, community-based organizations, and local leaders such as Nyumba Kumi elders, church leaders, and community health volunteers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three-day program will feature stakeholder workshops, training sessions, and community engagement activities designed to build capacity and encourage participation in waste segregation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key components of Phase 2 include training households on separating dry and wet waste, introducing a digital collection tracking app for monitoring waste management practices, and mobilizing community leaders as \u201cSegregation Champions.\u201d The initiative will also provide education materials, facilitate linkages with recyclers and composters, and reward high-performing households with waste management infrastructure such as bins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking during the forum, Serem emphasized the importance of stakeholder collaboration, describing the initiative as a potential \u201cgame changer\u201d for the county.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He called for increased involvement of youth and youth-led organizations to accelerate implementation and strengthen community participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other officials present included Environment Director of Planning and Administration Kipchumba Arusei, Deputy Director for Environment Abigael Kibet, and City Deputy Director for Administration and Planning Francis Chirchir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

County officials reiterated their commitment to enhancing waste management systems, noting that the CLT initiative aligns with broader efforts to ensure a cleaner and more sustainable environment for residents of Eldoret City and the wider Uasin Gishu County.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
