With the availability of a more reliable water supply within the county\u2014driven by the Nguzo 7 Manifesto and supported by the \u201cMache Biko Beko\u201d campaign\u2014irrigation is increasingly taking center stage as a sustainable solution to long-standing agricultural challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For years, crop development in several areas has been constrained by inadequate irrigation infrastructure. However, this is set to change following the transfer of the irrigation mandate from the Department of Agriculture to the Department of Water, Irrigation and Sanitation. The department is now leading the establishment of irrigation systems and related infrastructure across all sub-counties to boost agricultural productivity and enhance food security.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The County Government has officially rolled out a comprehensive programme for the survey, mapping, and technical assessment of irrigation infrastructure in all sub-counties within Uasin Gishu County. The exercise commenced on 2nd February 2026 and will run throughout the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The key objectives of the programme include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conducting a literature review of existing data from the National Government and other relevant institutions<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Identifying and mapping existing irrigation systems<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Undertaking technical and feasibility studies for proposed irrigation schemes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Developing work plans and budgets for irrigation systems and infrastructure<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking during the exercise in Kapseret Sub-County, the Assistant Director for Irrigation, Eng. Caroline Ngerechi noted that farmers are ready to embrace irrigation despite challenges related to water availability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn this process, we are also identifying potential water sources for areas currently lacking access. Every sub-county will have a proposed irrigation design to facilitate funding, with implementation expected to begin by April,\u201d she said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Principal Irrigation Engineer, Mr. Ezekiel Mare, reaffirmed the department\u2019s commitment to maintaining high technical standards throughout the process. He emphasized that the initiative will play a critical role during dry seasons by enhancing agricultural productivity and strengthening food security across the county.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exercise is expected to lay a strong foundation for long-term irrigation development, positioning Uasin Gishu County as a model for sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
