The County Government of Uasin Gishu, through the Department of Agriculture and Agribusiness, on Monday hosted the launch of the African Indigenous Vegetables (AIVs) Commercialization \u2014 a Vision 2030 Flagship Project \u2014 at the Eldoret National Polytechnic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Implemented in collaboration with the National Government, the National Museums of Kenya (NMK), and the Natural Products Industry Initiative for Kenya (NIP), the project aims to transform African Indigenous Vegetables from modest subsistence crops into scientifically guided commercial ventures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal is to elevate these vegetables\u2014already celebrated for their high nutritional value\u2014into profitable enterprises that enhance food security, boost farmer incomes, and contribute to Kenya\u2019s Vision 2030 agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking during the launch, the CECM for Agriculture, Dr. Sam Kotut, accompanied by Chief Officer Eng. Abraham Kiptalam and Director of Agriculture Mr. Reuben Seroney, emphasized that the project will empower farmers while promoting nutrition, agribusiness opportunities, and biodiversity conservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur focus is on transforming traditional vegetables into profitable agribusiness ventures for our farmers and youth.\u201d Dr. Kotut noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For over three decades, the National Museums of Kenya has been researching these green gems, proving that AIVs are not just ordinary leafy vegetables \u2014 they are rich in unique micronutrients and health-promoting properties. Building on this scientific foundation, NIP has taken a bold step by commercializing AIVs through producer training along the value chain and the distribution of certified seed varieties across 27 counties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project will also train county extension officers as Trainers of Trainers (ToTs) on modern agro-economic practices, covering large-scale production, proper harvesting, handling, packaging, as well as value addition and processing of AIVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Farmers eager to join this exciting green revolution are encouraged to contact their respective Ward Agricultural Officers for registration and training schedules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
